The College Store is dedicated to keep costs of textbooks as reasonable as possible for the students. One way that we accomplish this is to provide as many used books as possible. We receive a significant portion of those texts at Book Buy Back. But the student needs to keep in mind the following items to help insure their text will be bought back and to reduce the frustration when it is not.
WHY WASN'T MY TEXTBOOK PURCHASED AT BUYBACK?
BOOK BUY BACK IS PROVIDED AS A SERVICE TO THE STUDENTS BUT IS NOT A GUARANTEE THAT BOOKS WILL BE PURCHASED. Your textbook may not be purchased back for the following reasons.
  • The professor has changed texts for the next semester, or has not submitted his/her textbook request for the following semester.
  • The publisher has changed the edition of the textbook and we are no longer able to use the old edition.
  • The College Store has enough inventory leftover from the current semester. When this occurs, the textbook wholesalers who purchase the texts for the College Store may purchase it for their own inventory. The wholesalers supply colleges across the country so they will generally have a higher demand for textbooks than the College Store
  • The textbook was not in a suitable condition for resale. The best chance of having your textbook purchased back is to keep it in the best condition possible. We are aware that some wear and tear will occur during the semester, but excessive abuse will result in the loss of a purchase. The College Store will refuse any textbook that has excessive highlighting or writing – generally this is more than 1/4 - 1/3 of the text. Other examples such as torn covers, excessive water damage, missing pages, and broken bindings will more than likely result in the item not being purchased. The College Store will make a determination on these issues on a case by case basis.
  • The textbook was missing components that were included with the textbook, i.e. cd's, study materials, etc. When there are added materials from the publisher the College Store will try and determine if they are required by the professor, if not, the text is eligible for purchase. The wholesaler requires ALL additional materials in order for the text to be eligible for purchase for their inventory.

WHY DID MY FRIEND RECEIVE MORE MONEY FOR THE SAME TEXT?
There are a few reasons why one student may receive more money than another for the same text.
  • When the College Store buys back a text it pays 50% of the new price for the text whether it is in new or used condition.
  • Once the College Store's inventory numbers have been purchased then the wholesaler may purchase it. If the wholesaler purchases the text for their inventory they pay the market value for the text as determined by their system.
  • If the text is in a less than suitable condition, the College Store or wholesaler may purchase it for less than they would a text in good condition. If the College Store has purchased the text it will then sell the text as an "AS IS" at a reduced price and it will not be eligible for sale at the end of the semester.

DO I NEED TO BE PRESENT TO SELL BACK MY BOOKS?
If you can't be present, anyone you trust with your money can sell back your texts – parents, family member, friend – they do not need to be a student.
WHAT IF I MISS BUY BACK?
The College Store also holds an opening Buy Back the first two days of the Fall and Winter semester. Generally these texts will be purchased by the wholesaler for market value versus the College Store. But if the College Store has run low on inventory it will purchase texts as necessary.
WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT BOOK BUY BACK?
  • A photo I.D. is required at Buy Back.
  • You have the best chance to sell your book earlier in Buy Back before the College Store hits their inventory numbers. But remember that many students know this fact and start to camp out as soon as the SCRC opens in the morning. If you come in the morning of the first day expect a longer than usual wait due to the large number of students in line.
  • For the Fall and Winter Buy Backs we have Buy Backs at our Gaylord and Cheboygan campuses. Check the website for the date and time of these locations.
